Metal Fabrication, Design Build and Installation Case Studies
Ritchie Smith Feed Mill Expansion
Mainland Machinery has been involved in the design, construction and equipment installation of every major Ritchie Smith feed mill expansion since 1971.
When Ritchie Smith recently decided to expand further, they approached us to be involved in construction of a new feed mill. Mainland was involved in the fabrication and erection of structural steel and the installation of storage bins and feed mill equipment.
Lafarge Texada Island Expansion
Lafarge North America required an expansion to an existing lime quarry operation on Texada Island. A year and a half prior to construction, Mainland Machinery was approached by Lafarge to be part of the initial design team. When it came time to tender the project, we were first on the list of highly regarded steel fabricators as we had proven our ability to understand the needs of our customer.
Enviro 2000 Pelletizer
Mainland Machinery was approached with a concept and prototype photos of a machine designed to punch wood pellets out of sawdust. Even though we had never seen the prototype run, we were able to take this concept and develop it into a working machine. The new pelletizer is now designed to effectively punch a variety of materials such as wood, chicken manure, soap and other organic waste.
Mud Tank Design and Fabrication
A customer wanted two mud tanks built in a hurry, but he was waiting for an engineer to produce drawings. Time was running out and he ran the risk of not completing the mud tanks in time for drilling season. We said, “Why wait? Why don’t we do the drawings for you?” “You do that?” he said. From there, we took his few sketches and started designing. Within one week we had the preliminary drawings completed. One week after that we had working drawings and through ongoing communication with our customer, we were able to incorporate everything he needed in his mud tank. We delivered the two mud tanks in time for drilling season thanks to our full range of service and quick turn around time.
ZJ Solutions/Standard General Contracting
Alberta-based Standard General Contracting required the fabrication of an aggregate train load out system that included Mainland Machinery fabricating a double-boomed linier stacker. The stacker piled aggregate over two reclaim tunnels (also fabricated by us) prior to being sent to a surge bin for rail car load out.
Houwelling Nursery Heat Storage Tank
As part of a project that included supplying a waste wood handling and burning system, Mainland Machinery designed, built and installed a 75-foot diameter, 1.5 million gallon heat storage tank. The tank draws cool water from the bottom where it is sent to the boiler, heated and then pumped back to the same tank and stored on top of the cold water. In the evening the warm water is distributed across 25 acres of greenhouses to maintain a suitable growing environment.
Enviro-Klean
Mainland Machinery is the official manufacturer of Enviro-Klean soil remediation systems.
First American Scientific
Mainland Machinery manufactures First American Scientific’s kinetic drying systems.
Ray-mont Logistics
Mainland Machinery worked with Ray-mont Logistics to design a new system that would allow them to fill containers simultaneously from two rail lines at 250MT/hour. The system worked off of three rail lines and tied into an existing bagging line and became Ray-mont’s most modern facility. The system is totally automated and is recognized as having the highest transloading capacity in all of Canada.
We took care of conceptual design, detailed engineering, procurement of specialized equipment, foundations and structure, manufacture of structure, chutes and spouting, complete installation and commissioning.
The entire system was designed, manufactured and installed in a relatively short amount of time, and was done under very challenging site conditions, including the very high water table along the Fraser River.
Excel Feeds
Mainland Machinery worked on a pelleting system addition in an existing Excel Feeds feed mill, which was a design build project including conceptual design and layout, detailed engineering, supply and installation of all equipment and related structures.
We installed a new steam boiler, all processing and material handling equipment and new load out bins. We also refurbished owner-sourced used equipment. The new system provided an additional 12t/hour capacity.
P&H
Mainland Machinery worked on a design build project for P&H involving a single line container trans-shipping system, including the foundations, structural steel, loading chute, all spouting and dust control system.
This project increased production to 235MT/hour, incorporated two 50T holding bins and gave the client the ability to load 20’ or 45’ containers on the same line. We also designed and installed the dust control system, which included refurbishing owner supplied filter and fan.
